“In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad”

The article “In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad” is not typical journalism because even through it answers the main question (who, when, where, what and even how and why). But the article also has a narrative tone to it; the article uses rhetorical devices to tell the story along with the facts of what happened. But the rhetorical devices are applied mainly to the outer environment of the problem and the characters involved in it.  The article does not concentrate on the character’s inner world. This article is a new journalism kind of article because it explores deeper than typical journalism would and it tells the event with a narrative voice that is also not used in typical journalism. The elements of journalism presented in it are that it involves research of true events, responds to specific questions. But the article also presents a literary approach for the writer is creative while writing (presents various points of view to the explosion, gives possible explanations and causes to the problem) and it also writes about specific people as if to create a sentimental connection with the story.

The story leaves the reader wondering of the situation on China and its workers and it also offers a hidden truth of some of the biggest companies in the world, such as Apple. As a reader the article left me feeling sorry for the people involved in the accident and it also left me wandering about what Apple is doing. Personally, I buy many Apple products as do a lot of people and after having read the article I’m thinking if somehow I am a cause for such a things to happen. The story also leaves me with hope that Apple changes the work situation for these people that are working for them and helping them get money and become one of the greatest companies in the world.

Quote

Gay Talese once said" "I believe that if you go deep enough into characters they become so real that their stories feel like make-believe, they feel like fiction. I want to evoke the fictional current that flows beneath the stream of reality." The quote means that fiction is deeper than reality, fiction strikes more and makes better stories. When doing research he, as a journalist, goes deep into his characters that even through they may seem ordinary he finds in them something extraordinary, facts lead him to fiction. Talese wants to write a fictional reality, a story  based on reality that becomes fiction.

"Capote"

The movie “Capote” was released in 2005 and it tells the story Truman’s Capote research for his book “In cold Blood”, an account of the murders of a family in Kansa. The movie emphases on the relationship the writer developed with the killers, especially with Perry Smith, and what this master piece meant to the writer and writing at the time.  “In cold blood” is considered to be a non-fiction novel, the prefect combination of literature and journalism.  The book combines the aesthetic feeling of literature with the different rhetorical devices used by Capote and the research and rigor of journalism. This combination changed the way people perceived writing for it was an innovative idea to write a true story based on pure facts and then add to these an aesthetic feeling. What Truman Capote did on “Cold Blood” was groundbreaking and yet that is not the most essential characteristic of the book. The book was so remarkable because of how beautifully it was written, the descriptions it gave and the ride to the inner and outer world of some very interesting characters.

The movie also refers to Capote’s life as he was writing the book and from it the viewer gets an inside view into the writer true self. With the book it is clear that Capote was a socialite that everyone loved especially himself, he hold himself in a pedestal and thought of his work as quite magnificent. But then all of this confident may be just a cover up to hide all his pain and sorrow after a quite sad and horrible childhood, which included not having a stable home and his mother’s suicide. There is also the revelation that Capote did not decide to write the book because of the murders but because the murderers, especially because of Perry. He thought this character was quite interesting that represented the contradiction of a quite world against a violent and lonely one, it was almost as if Perry was a portrayed of himself that helped him understand the world better. And yet even through it is clear that Capote feels emotionally connected to Perry, in the movie it is shown how he lies and he uses him for the benefit of his book. Capote was both Perry’s friend and a researcher wanting information. “In Cold Blood” Capote develops his a new type of writing but also develops a humanity he did not posses that is shown in the book, probably unconsciously, and it is this last element that makes the book a master piece.

Movie

“All the President’s Men” is a movie from 1976 in which the story of how reporters Woodward and Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Nixon’s resignation is portrayed. This movie and its story are directly related to the creation of a new type of journalism. Woodward and Bernstein started to look into the Watergate story with the point of view of ordinary journalism (investigating events and facts and responding to: when, where, what, who, why, how.) But soon they figured out that the story they were after was no ordinary story and then they had to expand their vision and explore a further than common journalism would. These reporters had to do a exhausting investigation and research of facts, they had to deal with enormous obstacles that included putting their lives in danger. What they did was journalism but an innovative type of journalism for uncovering the Watergate story meant incriminating the most powerful men in the world and looking for something that seemed impossible to find, for it was unimaginable for it to have happened.

I believe that the Watergate story is quite amazing for it represents so many powerful things that sometimes are underrated. Reporters Woodward and Bernstein, with very few resources, were able to stand against one of the most powerful governments of the world and win. Their victory shows how truth can prevail and how hard work and dedication can payoff, even when it seems impossible for it to happen. The articles published regarding this matter are a prove of the power within the written world, for it with it that two unimportant reporters defeated one of the most powerful man in the world, the President of the United States. And created one of the biggest scandals ever on the United States that caused the President to resign his position. The determination of two ordinary people and their written work made all of this possible and that’s why the Watergate scandal is so important aside from all of what it meant and caused.

Letter to Truman Capote

I just finished reading the first chapter of your well-known book “In Cold Blood”. After having learnt the story and the motivation that drove you to write the book. I have first to congratulate for your brilliant idea of creating a Non- fiction novel based only on facts that eventually changed in some degree the general notion of journalism and literature. The process of investigating must have been exhausting but I must say that it paid off for you ended up creating a novel that has credibility. Although I must say that I don’t believe that EVERYTHING in the story is 100% true. For I believe that when writing the author gives to the story subjectivity through his way of writing. As a writer, you are known for the use of rhetorical devices, which cause reality to be transformed into an esthetic point of view. I think that this was done unconsciously and that it was your intention to make the book completely true. And you did as far as it could be done, the writing of the book included incredibly solid research and verifiable information, for literature is not part of reality.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge you for creating a new type of writing that is completely based on true events and then when brought down to words it becomes art.
